Universal Hit With Lawsuit Over Jay Z & Justin Timberlake's "Suit & Tie"

Another lawsuit is plaguing one of 2013’s biggest songs, but the artists involved aren’t at the helm of it. According to TMZ, Universal Music Group was hit with a suit over a sample used Justin Timberlake‘s melody “Suit & Tie” featuring Jay Z.

A R&B group from the 70s named Sly, Slick and Wicked claim their song “Sho’ Nuff” (1973) was used for the Timbaland-produced instrumental. The group states that although Universal properly cleared the sample, the music label reportedly failed to obtain the rights to use the singers’ vocals.

Sly, Slick and Wicked are seeking an undisclosed amount of money from the label, and cites the song’s success as more incentive to seek repayment. “Suit & Tie” went on to sell more than 3 million copies worldwide.

The soundscape is featured on Timberlake’s critically-acclaimed album, The 20/20 Experience, which also features “Mirrors,” “Spaceship Coupe,” and “Tunnel Vision.”
